Summer ’16 Re-watches: Two-Lane Blacktop

ames Taylor as a silent driver, Dennis Wilson (drummer for The Beach Boys), his robotic mechanic, Laurie Bird as the object of both their fancies, and a very listless Warren Oats racing across Route 66 for their cars’ pink slips.

The Good Films of 2016 (what few there are)

So far, 2016 has produced some of the best looking bad films I’ve seen in recent years: X-Men: Apocalypse, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, to name a few.

Poltergeist 2.O : The Darkness

Much like Poltergeist, The Darkness follows a structure that focuses primarily on the vulnerabilities of a child conductive whose susceptibility to the paranormal enable the demon or demons to enact their darkness upon this innocent suburban family.

Inside Out: Pixar’s Wondrous Stream of Consciousness

Inside Out sheds light on those tumultuous preteen problems we’ve all forgotten about. Twelve year-old Riley and her family have moved to San Francisco. They’re a close family with happy memories, big dreams and a hopeful future. But Riley’s new home has greatly effected her personality and diminished her childhood. She’s a kid, so her emotions are amplified and run …

There’s Always Something Bigger

It’s been a long time coming. Jurassic World has been picked and shoved by numerous writers over the past decade, endlessly revising and editing under the supervision of Steven Spielberg.  Spielberg insisted on a sequel that recaptured the spectacle of the original. With many writers pushing and shoving the film in different directions, I couldn’t imagine where else it could …

“Just dim the lights and blast the volume, that’ll scare ’em!”

Insidious: Chapter 3 has everything we’ve come to expect from the series: an idiotic family haunted by evil entities, Shakespearean demons and never ending jump scares that basically fund the film. This time we explore old psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) and her encounter with a ferocious demon that bump her back into business and prepare her for more devious …

“Tomorrowland,” Brad Bird’s Labor of Love

Tomorrowland works more as an idea than a place, yet as a film it soars higher than any live action Disney film in recent years. That’s a bold statement, I know, but not since the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” has something been crafted so lovingly that its finished product allowed its highs to outweigh its lows. The film was …

Age of Ultron – The Empire Strikes Back of the Marvel Movies

An unexpected romance between Natasha Romanoff and The Incredible Hulk leaves the female spy questioning the initial intent behind her assignment. By sending her to the reclusive scientist, did Nick Fury know they would fall in love? His response: “You hope for the best then make do with what you get.” This is the most important line in Joss …

Yes. “It Follows” IS a great film.

It’s like an R.L. Stine story on drugs. The kids play around, piss off a monster, tell it to aloof parents, and leave us on a cliffhanger. There is a moment in David Robert Mitchell’s, “It Follows” where Jay (the film’s protagonist played by Maika Monroe) has just returned home safely from an ordeal she believes is long over. Jay …
