Here’s the Rub
A family returns home from a vacation with an evil that preys on their deepest emotions and darkest secrets.
What to Expect
There is nothing different that separates this film from those similar to it within this horror/thriller drama. Much like Poltergeist, The Darkness follows a structure that focuses primarily on the vulnerabilities of a child conductive whose susceptibility to the paranormal enable the demon or demons to enact their darkness upon this innocent suburban family.
It’s Worth Mentioning
When the Darkness enacts its evil against the family, the true nature of their relationships are exposed and presents a more suspensive narrative than the monster coming to get you plot. Watching the family succumb to the dark emotions within themselves play horribly enough to make you want to cringe. There is the family dealing with their Austic child and demon puppet. The sister who suffers from issues with body image and bulimia. The mother who is an recover alcoholic. And the Bacon, yes Kevin Bacon. The father who struggles with lust and temptation.
Breaking the conventional Hollywood story structure with this thriller narrative would work wonders. A demon who goes unseen but whose intent is visible through the actions of the family it haunts was more compelling and suspenseful than the monster in the closet jump out creep someone elements.
