The summer of ’14 was an utter disappointment and so we held out hope for ’15. This magical year would bring to the summer a slate of blockbuster movies capable of keeping tookus’s in auditorium seats around the nation. Again, we hoped.
The going was good in May with the official start of the season and Avengers: The Age of Ultron. However that petered out rather quickly and the films to follow were mediocre in their box office performances. There were movies released this summer that were widely successful i.e. the recently reported $404 million taken in by Terminator: Genisys of all films, it was just good enough.
What truly makes a summer of movies “a summer of movies” is an over abundance of good movies performing with and against one another instead of the new this new setup which is to release one blockbuster picture and wait a few weeks to a month before releasing the next big performer. I have worked in the industry for some time and have witnessed times where huge box office earners were released on a weekly basis. Avengers would have to go up against, let’s say for giggles, Furious 7. Studios weren’t afraid of a little competition because the summer was long and they would in due time acquire their audience.
Fear of Competition and lack of content and putting all your eggs in one basket.
